Darwin Press.

History

Darwin Press has existed since 1925 and is, to this day, a family run business. Leighton and Ashley Brown, grandsons of the founder, run the company today. Founded by James W. Brown, the company was originally based in Southwark's East Street. The company's official name is J. W. Brown (Printers) Ltd but in the 1950s it was located just off the Old Kent Road in a small side road called Darwin Street. Known as 'the Press in Darwin Street' the company inevitably picked up the trading name of Darwin Press.

Most of the company's history was made under our father John William Brown, known affectionately as 'Jack'. He shaped the firm, helped build a secure client foundation and introduced many revolutionary pieces of equipment to keep the company competitive. This sensible policy has kept us ahead today.

Deep in the heart of Greenwich

Darwin Press is an energetic and enthusiastic company which is delighted and proud to be at the busy and thriving heart of Greenwich. Work includes a wide range of exciting projects for blue chip clients and local businesses alike.

Quality and service have been key factors in the company's success, together with investment in the technology needed to keep pace with a fast-changing world, the latest investment being a New Digital Press, The Xerox 700.

The company has also recently upgraded to a 'Computer to Plate' system. This is an improvement on traditional print making since it increases sharpness and detail. A far cry from their grandfather's time, when lead type was manually placed into a form! The Browns do however have an even longer history in the printing industry - right back to the early 1800s, when an ancestor invented one of the first flat-bed printing presses. Other family members could also have been found selling ink from a horse cart!

Michael Heath Ltd was established by its founder Michael in 1968. Over the last forty years, hard work and dedication to the production of top-quality lithographic print material has resulted in a customer base that has grown considerably - not only within the UK, but also into other parts of Europe.

High professional standards and a reliable personal service to all our clients, large or small, has undoubtedly played a positive role in the company's success. In more recent years Ashley Brown has worked closely alongside Michael, developing the business and services offered even further.

Michael Heath Print, now run by Ashley, has become a stand-alone division of Michael Heath Ltd, incorporated into Darwin Press, under the main banner of J.W. Brown Printers Ltd, which has been run by Ashley's brother Leighton for many years. In fact, their grandfather founded Darwin Press in 1925, and the Browns have an even longer history in the printing industry - right back to the early 1800s, when an ancestor invented one of the first flat-bed printing presses. Other family members could also have been found selling ink from a horse cart!
